Preparing to Return Home
As you finish your studies, you’ll need to plan your departure. Here’s how to get started:
- Decide What to Keep:Â Sort belongings (e.g., clothes, books, kitchenware) and decide what to take, sell, donate, or discard.
- Shipping Options:Â Compare costs and timing for air freight, sea mail, or excess baggage. Air is faster but pricier; sea mail is cheaper but slower.
- Customs Regulations: Check your home country’s rules on importing goods (e.g., electronics, personal items) to avoid duties or delays.

1
Passport & Documents
Ensure your passport and visa are valid. Carry your NVC offer letter and eCoE.
2
Book Flights
Confirm departure dates, check if departure tax is included, and inform your family of your arrival. Book early for better rates (est. AUD $500–$2,000, depending on destination).
3
Baggage Limits
Check airline rules for weight/size (typically 23–30 kg checked, 7 kg carry-on). Verify rules for stopovers. Excess baggage fees can be AUD $50–$150/kg.
4
Airport
Melbourne: Use SkyBus, taxi, or rideshare to Melbourne Airport (MEL). Arrive 2–3 hours.
Brisbane: Take Airtrain, taxi, or rideshare to Brisbane Airport (BNE). Arrive 2–3 hours.

Wrap up your time in Australia thoughtfully:
- Furniture & Items:Â Sell large items (e.g., car, desk) via Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace. Donate smaller items to charity or new students.
- Mail: Arrange for a friend to collect and forward mail, as Australia Post doesn’t redirect overseas.
- Friends & Hosts:Â Thank your host family (if applicable) and visit friends to say goodbye. Share contact details to stay in touch.
