Completing Your Studies

Congratulations on completing your studies at NVC

Preparing to Return Home

As you finish your studies, you’ll need to plan your departure. Here’s how to get started:

  • Decide What to Keep: Sort belongings (e.g., clothes, books, kitchenware) and decide what to take, sell, donate, or discard.
  • Shipping Options: Compare costs and timing for air freight, sea mail, or excess baggage. Air is faster but pricier; sea mail is cheaper but slower.
  • Customs Regulations: Check your home country’s rules on importing goods (e.g., electronics, personal items) to avoid duties or delays.
Tip: Contact NVC’s Student Support at international@novavocational.edu.au for advice on shipping or selling items.

1

Passport & Documents

Ensure your passport and visa are valid. Carry your NVC offer letter and eCoE.

2

Book Flights

Confirm departure dates, check if departure tax is included, and inform your family of your arrival. Book early for better rates (est. AUD $500–$2,000, depending on destination).

3

Baggage Limits

Check airline rules for weight/size (typically 23–30 kg checked, 7 kg carry-on). Verify rules for stopovers. Excess baggage fees can be AUD $50–$150/kg.

4

Airport

Melbourne: Use SkyBus, taxi, or rideshare to Melbourne Airport (MEL). Arrive 2–3 hours.
Brisbane: Take Airtrain, taxi, or rideshare to Brisbane Airport (BNE). Arrive 2–3 hours.

Note: Share your travel plans with Nova’s student adviser and a friend. Include a contact number for emergencies.

Disclaimer: This information is provided as a general guide only and does not constitute legal, financial, or immigration advice. Please consult official sources or qualified professionals for advice specific to your situation.

Accommodation

Notify your landlord, return keys, and request your bond refund (AUD $500–$2,000).

Bills & Services

Pay all bills and disconnect services like Origin Energy or Telstra before moving out.

Banking

Close your bank account or transfer funds home, avoid carrying large cash and keep digital records.

Lodge your tax return, get your payment summary, and give your home address for refunds to ATO.

Personal Items & Goodbyes

Wrap up your time in Australia thoughtfully:

  • Furniture & Items: Sell large items (e.g., car, desk) via Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace. Donate smaller items to charity or new students.
  • Mail: Arrange for a friend to collect and forward mail, as Australia Post doesn’t redirect overseas.
  • Friends & Hosts: Thank your host family (if applicable) and visit friends to say goodbye. Share contact details to stay in touch.
Tip: Host a farewell gathering to celebrate your time in Australia.

1
